What to Look for in a Wrist Brace

If you are looking for wrist brace supports, you will find that there are many types of supports, guards, and splints available. Each type has its own purpose, and each type can have many variations in design and materials. So how do you choose the right support for your specific condition?

Types of Wrist Braces

The type and degree of wrist brace support you need can vary depending on the condition of the wrist and the type of support desired. There are generally three types of wrist braces available; wrist supports, wrist guards and wrist splints; with each offering a varying degree of support and protection.

Wrist Braces

Our wrists are often put under excess stress during many of our daily activities. Often while working under abnormal conditions, we put extra strain on our wrists which can cause pain and injury to our wrists. A wrist brace support can provide extra support to prevent this type of injury or discomfort. They are usually made of some type of elastic material, which makes them ideal for sports or other activities where you want extra support, but still want to maintain full flexibility of the wrist.

Wrist Guards

Like a wrist support, a wrist guard will support the wrist during movement, but will at the same time have some form of solid plate or panel to provide protection from bumping and other contact.

Wrist Splints

Like a wrist brace, a wrist guard will support the wrist during movement, but will at the same time have some form of solid plate or panel to provide protection from bumping and other contacts.

Choosing the Right Type of Wrist Braces

When choosing wrist braces you want a support that will provide the support you need, but not unnecessarily limit your range of movement. When choosing wrist brace support for activities such as sports, you will probably be wearing the support for shorter periods of time, so you can choose the support that provides a firm fit.

However, while recovering from an injury or surgery you will be wearing a wrist guard or wrist splint for longer periods of time and will want to minimize undue pressure on nerves and tendons in the wrist and hands. You want a firm fit, but do not want to impede blood flow.

Wrist splints are especially helpful for recovery from injury or neurological problems such as those caused by arthritis or Parkinson's. Wrist braces can permit the wearer to move the finger and thumb joints, so the wearer can maintain regular activities. A wrist splint is particularly helpful to wear during sleep, as it will prevent the wrist from bending, and the thumb from contracting, thus promoting proper healing.

Choosing the Right Material for a Wrist Brace

A wrist brace made with the right material will be much more comfortable to wear, and much more convenient to put on and off. This can be an important factor influencing whether or not a patient will even comply with wearing the brace.

Adjustable straps with Velcro closure will make putting on and removing the support convenient. An aluminum wrist splint made of malleable material is easy to bend to the desired angle.
